We’re looking for senior tradespeople with Spider Excavator operator experience. This is a travel job with projects across Canada.

 

A number of our projects involve the operation of Spider Excavators. Spider operators are critical to our success of our work. We are looking for people with hands-on experience running Spiders and other heavy equipment across a wide variety of projects.

Qualifications

  • In-depth understanding of high-angle scaling, rockfall mitigation, and geohazard stabilization procedures.
  • Strong experience in operating heavy construction equipment and managing its use on job sites.
  • Ability to take charge of projects, lead teams, and work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to address challenges quickly and effectively.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to manage and motivate a crew.
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Safety-focused mindset with the ability to identify hazards and implement corrective measures.
  • Ability to mentor and train less experienced staff in technical skills, safety, and equipment use.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure environments and ensure team collaboration.
  • Class A CDL preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Prior experience operating spider excavators in geohazard or extreme terrain environments required.
  • Basic computer and cell phone proficiency required.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  

  • Climates vary in degrees, in tropical to desert environments.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate and hearing protection is often required.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Regular heavy lifting (75lbs+) of construction materials on the job site.

Travel

Up to 100% travel across Canada.

 

Compensation

  • The wage for this role is $46 - $58/hour.
  • Hourly rate based on your experience. In general, our pay scale increases for:
    • More years of experience and technical expertise with the tools and technologies in drilling.
    • Ability to drive (CMV or CDL)
    • Experience or certifications for heavy equipment operations (skid steer, forklift, Bobcat, Scissor lift, or CDL vehicles.)
    • Experience with shotcrete or grouting pumps on the job.
    • Experience directing teams, managing customer interactions, or managing projects.
  • All positions earn overtime
  • 100% paid travel

Responsibilities

  • Operate spider excavators to complete excavation, drilling, and material handling tasks in difficult terrain.
  • Assist in the installation of geohazard mitigation systems per job site drawings and Standard Operating Procedures as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Utilize winch systems, stabilizers, and climbing capabilities of the spider excavator for safe and effective operation on steep slopes.
  • Communicate effectively with ground crews and other operators to ensure safe and coordinated operations.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance to ensure optimal machine performance.
  • Troubleshoot and report mechanical issues to the Superintendent and coordinate necessary repairs.
  • Comply with all company policies, including Health and Safety standards, Drug and Alcohol policy, Travel policy, Vehicle policy, and Employee Manual.
  • Maintain and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and assigned small tools (e.g., cell phones, tablets, radios).
  • Obtain and maintain required certifications within 30 days of hire, including but not limited to:
    • Assigned Equipment Certification for Spider Excavators
    • OSHA 10
    • CPR/First Aid
    • Aerial/Forklift
    • Respirator Fit Test
  • Operate heavy equipment, including excavators, skid steers, man lifts, and forklifts, to complete construction tasks.
  • Install geohazard mitigation products per job site drawings and Standard Operating Procedures as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members to clarify daily job site duties.
  • Oversee site preparation, equipment mobilization, and material distribution to ensure the safe and efficient execution of tasks.
  • Perform regular maintenance checks and troubleshoot equipment to ensure continuous operations.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports for the Foreman or Superintendent.
  • Perform final inspections of job sites to ensure safety and quality before demobilization.
  • Provide support in managing project budgets, timelines, and logistics when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Foreman.
